Scott Pilgrim vs The World has been anticipated by many since it was announced that Edgar Wright, director of cop caper Hot Fuzz, demon drollery Shaun of the Dead and small screen sitcom Spaced was taking the reigns. Scott Pilgrim was originally a comic by Bryan Lee O’Malley, focusing around a slacker teenager (here played by, surprise surprise Michael Cera) who falls in love with a delivery girl called Ramona Flowers (played above by Mary Elizabeth Winstead). However, life never being easy, in order to date Ramona, Scott will have to take on her seven evil ex’s… and these ain’t no ordinary group of former lovers. With the first trailer released the20 licks their lips and dives in to see if once again, Edgar can be our movie Mr Wright.
Tim Burton is famous for his worlds. His ability to create magical and frightful places be they in complete fantasy or rooted somewhere more real is almost unrivalled. Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and now Alice in Wonderland, all are full of larger than life or magical characters inhabiting worlds so uniquely their own but unmistakeably Burton-esque. He has a vision for every film he creates and with his trusted crew, including the almost ever present Johnny Depp and partner Helena Bonham Carter, he has tools he can trust to bring them to fruition. Almost.
I Love You Phillip Morris tells the unlikely but true story of Steven Jay Russell (Jim Carrey), prolific conman, accomplished escape artist, adopted former cop and flamboyant homosexual. Spending his whole life living one lie after another he eventually stumbles onto true love while in prison, where he meets his soul mate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor) who he will do anything (and I mean anything) to stay together with.
We meet Russell on his death bed as he begins to recount the assiduous story of how he got there. From a young age he decides he wants to live his life right so we find him in the perfect middle American family unit. He combines his loving wife & adorable daughter with a life devoted to upholding the law and praising the lord. All this however masks the first lie we are introduced to in his life, he is in fact gay. He lives this life in secret until the night he is nearly killed in a car accident which prompts him to re-evaluate that he must be true to himself and live his life to the fullest. From here on out we are in for a non stop thrill ride of adventure and love.
